DESCRIPTION:Our speaker will be Steve Rutldedge from the Rotary Club of Whi
tby Sunrise who will be attending the meeting live at the club. Since reti
rement from the computer industry Steve has concentrated on a multitude of
local and international community support projects. One of the longstandi
ng projects that he has been involved with for the past 13 years is Adopt
a Village in Laos. Since 2009\, Adopt A Village in Laos has completed proj
ects supplying over 65 villages with filtered water one family at a time\,
serving over 35\,000 rural villagers\, constructed over 2 dozen permanent
water supplies\, repaired numerous others\, built dozens of toilet banks\
, 12 school construction projects and continues to sponsor a host of secon
dary and university students\, among other special interest projects. Rais
ing money has been challenging over the pandemic but due to the collapse o
f the local currency (the Kip)\, they've been able to actually get more fo
r less and continue to move forward on projects. For historical context\,
Laos was the most heavily bombed country in the world during the 1960's-70
's. Many of these bombs failed to explode and remain embedded in the groun
d creating conditions ripe for accidental detonation.
